A determined knock by promising teenager Dan Godfrey helped Stogumber to a four-wicket victory at home to Bagborough on Saturday.
Godfrey batted throughout the innings, keeping a cool head on his young shoulders as wickets fell around him. Only Robbie Watts, with a spirited 42, gave him any real support as Stogumber chased down 164 to win. They achieved their target in the 28th over, with Godfrey, who cracked ten fours and two sixes, finishing on an excellent 69 not out. He gave three difficult chances which, had they been taken, could well have seen Stogumber slip to their first defeat of the season.
Robin Wood, with 51, and a splendid 59 not out by Tom Evans, helped the visitors to 163 in their 40 overs. Skipper James Rexworthy bowled a tight line for the home side, finishing with 1-32 in 12 overs, but it was the pace and movement of Chris Weetch that kept the innings in check. Weetch finished with the excellent figures of 4-45 off 12 overs.
Stogumber will certainly have to bat better when they travel to Carhampton looking for their eighth consecutive victory of the season.
Stogumber 23 points, Bagborough 8 points.
