Fine batting by Mark Hannaford and Tom Meek took Lydeard St. Lawrence to the brink of victory at home to league leaders Stogumber on Saturday.
In an exciting finish, Stogumber’s captain James Rexworthy took two wickets in seven balls to leave his side winners by just nine runs, thus extending their unbeaten run to six matches.
The close finish had been set up by a remarkable knock by Mark Hannaford and a more sedate innings from Tom Meek. Hannaford scored ten fours and just one single in his 41 and there was relief throughout the Stogumber side when he was finally snared by Chris Weetch. A hostile spell of bowling by Mark Bryant, who finished with four wickets, coupled with Rexworthy’s late strikes, finally saw Stogumber home.
A battling half century by Simon Penny, his fourth fifty of the season, coupled with a sparkling undefeated 50 from Brandon Walsh, which included nine fours, were the highlights of Stogumber’s innings.
