NORTH NEWTON V STOGUMBER

9/14/2012

Any hopes Stogumber had of promotion from Division Two of the Shrubbery Somerset League were virtually blown away by a below par batting performance on Saturday.
Only a remarkable run of poor results from the teams above them in the next three weeks will allow Stogumber a return to Division One from where they were so unluckily relegated last season.
Requiring just 147 for victory, albeit on a wicket which helped the bowlers throughout, they crashed to 75 all out, with only youngster Andy Godfrey showing any resilience. Godfrey scored a determined 24, but only two other players, James Weetch (11) and Brian Penny (10) managed to reach double figures. The combination of A. and J. White brought about their downfall: they took 5 – 20 and 4 – 10 respectively.
Robbie Rexworthy was the star of Stogumber’s bowling attack on a wicket that batsmen found difficult throughout. He took 5 – 29 in 12 overs as the home side collapsed from 61 – 3 to 146 all out. Although failing to take a wicket, Rexworthy was given good support from Brian Penny, whose 12 overs cost just 19 runs.

STOGUMBER V WINCANTON

Stogumber’s promotion hopes were dealt a severe blow on Saturday when their home match against Wincanton became a victim of the weather.
While other sides around them in Division Two of the Shrubbery Somerset League managed to complete their games – and several of them won – heavy rain finally brought a halt to proceedings with the match poised at an interesting stage.
Batting first, Stogumber started well with James Weetch and Dan Godfrey putting on 69 in the first ten overs. A fierce storm at this stage sent players rushing to the pavilion where they watched as the square became partially flooded. Incredibly, with copious amounts of sawdust, play was able to resume some two hours later.
Godfrey, who scored a fine 25, was immediately caught behind with the score on 105 but the in-form Weetch hammered his way to exactly 100 before he was bowled going for another big shot. His innings included 13 fours and four sixes. James Rexworthy then took up the run challenge and the ball disappeared to all parts of the ground. He was undefeated on 66 when Stogumber’s declaration came with the score on 239 for 4.
Wincanton had 37 overs to achieve their target but with just one over gone, another heavy shower sent players scurrying once again to the pavilion and finally brought a damp end to the match.
Points: Stogumber 22, Wincanton 16.

NORTH CURRY V STOGUMBER 28 JULY

Stogumber’s young players came to the fore on Saturday as they swept aside the challenge of second placed North Curry in Division Two of the Shrubbery Somerset League. Eli Hayes, just 18, and Scott Howe, aged 16, both hit their highest league scores, before 13-year-old Ben Howe, brother of Scott, took vital wickets with his leg spin.
Asked to bat on a quick wicket, Stogumber lost Robbie Watts (11) in the third over and despite a few hefty blows from Mark Bryant (23) they slipped to 65 for 3. James Rexworthy then joined Weetch and these two took the score to 125 before the skipper top edged a straight drive and was well caught on the extra cover boundary. Weetch, who had hammered 144 the previous week, had been in total command and it was a shock to everyone when his fine innings, which included two sixes and six fours, came to an end.
Rexworthy (22) was out three overs later and Stogumber’s middle order was then swept aside by the spin of Harry Pike. When Hayes came to the wicket, however, he quickly took control of the situation. His first three scoring shots rocketed to the boundary and with a mixture of fine defence and attack he struck a priceless 43, which included seven fours. Hayes had put the home side’s bowling to the sword and Scott Howe continued the carnage with an excellent 31, aided and abetted by his brother Ben, who was undefeated at the end with 12 as Stogumber finished on 230.
These late order runs were to later prove crucial, although when the home side had reached 101 in pretty quick time for the loss of just one wicket, the visitors appeared to be heading for defeat. But the introduction of Ben Howe into the attack changed the course of the game. He quickly accounted for the dangerous Thorne (58) and a few overs later he got past the defensive shot of Chalmers (49).
The home side were rocking and they never recovered. Brian Penny was showing all his experience at the other end with his medium cutters and wickets fell regularly. Man of the match Howe finished with 4 for 35 off 8.3 overs and Penny 3 for 58 off 12 overs as the home side stuttered to 175 all out. This was a fine win for Stogumber and a splendid day for the youngsters.
Points: North Curry 18, Stogumber 30.

STOGUMBER V CASTLE CARY 21 JULY

A brilliant 144 by skipper James Weetch was the cornerstone of Stogumber’s narrow six run victory at home to Castle Cary in Division Two of the Shrubbery Somerset League on Saturday.
In a thrilling finish, the visitors fell just short of an imposing 323 runs target. With two overs remaining they wanted 24 runs for an unlikely win and this was reduced to just 13 off the final over.
On an excellent batting track, remarkably firm despite the heavy rain, and with two batsmen well set, home supporters were fearing the worst. All eyes were now on Robbie Rexworthy who was entrusted with the final over. Playing his first game of the season, Rexworthy responded well to the pressure and just seven runs were scored.
Earlier, the game had been dominated by Weetch. Scoring all around the wicket, he smashed 14 fours and seven sixes as he pillaged the visitor’s bowling attack. He featured in a second wicket partnership of 50 with promising youngster Dan Godfrey (21) and when the in form Mark Bryant (52) joined him, there was no hiding place for the visiting bowling attack.
Runs came at a rapid pace with the ball disappearing to all parts of the ground. Bryant was caught and bowled just after completing his half-century with the score on 176 but Weetch continued his merry way. He was finally out to an excellent catch on the boundary for a scintillating 144. James Rexworthy then hit an undefeated 42 which enabled Stogumber to reach 322 for 7.
Castle Cary’s openers Lake and P. Atkins set the game up brilliantly with a partnership of 170 but three wickets for James Rexwothy and two for Brandon Walsh just kept the home side in front. And then came that final over from Robbie Rexworthy which had everyone on the edge of their seats.
Points: Stogumber 30, Castle Cary 17.
